Firmin A. Paulus, 91, of Midland, died early Tuesday morning, May 15, 2014, at Stratford Village. He was born Nov. 29, 1922, in Russia, Ohio, son of the late John and Flora (Francis) Paulus. Firmin attended schools in Russia, Ohio, graduating from Russia High School. He earned a degree from The University of Dayton and an MBA from Harvard University
Firmin served in World War II
as a 1st Lt. with the Seventh Marine Regiment during the Battle of Okinawa.
He married the former Helen Monnier Aug. 1, 1946, in Shelby County, Ohio. She preceded him in death May 28, 2010.
Firmin joined The Dow Chemical Co., and they moved to Midland in Oct. of 1950. He served in a number of accounting positions, and was the assistant controller of Dow before retiring in 1982. He also served in a number of public service roles which included past president of the United Way of Midland County and director of the Midland Area Community Foundation.
Firmin is survived by four sons, Mark (Sally) Paulus, Jeffry (Jean) Paulus, and John Paulus, all of Midland, Alan (Julie) Paulus of Bay Village, Ohio; and one daughter, Janet Hepler of Toledo, Ohio. Also surviving is one sister, Rosanne Grilliot of Stuart, Fla.; six grandchildren, Jennifer (Ben) Semeyn, Jonathan Paulus, Teresa (Kevin) Heffernan, Kathryn (Dan) Coil and Brooke and Christopher Hepler; and by five great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents and wife, Firmin was preceded in death by six brothers, Cletus, Francis, Cyril, Dennis, Norbert and Leo; and by one sister, Ethyl.
The funeral liturgy will be celebrated at 10 a.m., Monday, May 19, 2014, at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, with Fr. Kevin Maksym as celebrant. Entombment will be in the New Calvary Mausoleum. Firmin's family will receive friends at the Ware-Smith-Woolever Funeral Home, 1200 W. Wheeler St. on Sunday, from 4-7 p.m., and at the church on Monday, from 9 a.m. until the time of mass. Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. Full military honors will be presented by the Midland Area Veterans
