Guerdon E. Schumacher, 85, of Beaverton, and Hawthorne of Leesburg, Fla., passed away in Midland on Monday, Dec. 9, 2013. He was born in Detroit on July 1, 1928, the son of Jacob & Hilda (Carter) Schumacher. Guerdon married his high school sweetheart, Paula Cox on Aug. 6, 1949. He graduated from Elsie High School in 1945, and then went on to graduate from Michigan State University
in 1949. In the fall of 1949, he and Paula came to Beaverton to teach in the Beaverton Rural High School. Guerdon taught Jr. High science and math and was the Assistant Boys Football and Basketball coach, while Paula taught Home Economics.
In late 1952, Guerdon was offered the opportunity to purchase the RL Johnson Insurance Agency, and in January of 1953, he became an Insurance Agent. The agency was very fortunate over the years to have many wonderful employees. In 1985, the Schumacher Insurance Agency was sold, and he was then able to spend more time pheasant hunting, fishing, boating and golfing, all of which he loved to do. He was also able to devote additional attention to his avid love and interest in the sports programs of both Beaverton High School and Michigan State University.
He served many years as Secretary of the Beaverton Businessman's Association, as well as many years on the City Parks Committee and the Housing and Development Committee of Beaverton and Gladwin County. Guerdon belonged to the (Beaverton) Coleman Masonic Lodge, and he became a Mason on Nov. 21, 1950, Master Mason on Feb. 27, 1951, 32nd Degree Mason on Oct. 29, 1971, Scottish Rite, High Twelve Club in Leesburg, Fla., and a Charter Member of F.O.E. Gladwin Aerie 3292.
He was a 63 year member of the Beaverton Lions Club, a 60 year member of the Beaverton United Methodist Church, and he served for many years on the Chemical Bank Board. Guerdon took great pride in his family.
He leaves to cherish his memory, his loving wife of 64 years, Paula Schumacher of Beaverton. He was also blessed with two sons, Carter, who married Karen Brydon, and their two children, Carter Philip and Susan; Ronald, who married Christine Loose, and their son, Derek. Following the death of their son Ronald who was killed in an automobile accident in 1986, Christine then married Dennis Fritz, and they have 2 sons, Jesse and Nicholas. Also surviving him is a sister, Catherine Rumbaugh; and sister in-law, Betty Schumacher. He is preceded in death by his son, Ronald Schumacher; granddaughter, Kristin; and niece, Janith Rumbaugh-Taylor.
Funeral Services will be conducted by Pastor Lynn Chappell on Friday, Dec. 13, 2013, 11:00 a.m. at Hall-Kokotovich Funeral Home, Beaverton. The family will receive friends on Thursday, Dec. 12, 2013 from 12-8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. His final resting place will Beaverton City Cemetery.
