Howard Oscar Yakel, 95, of Midland, Michigan, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Jan. 10, 2014 at MidMichigan Medical Center in Midland.

Howard was born Sept. 7, 1918, in Bay City, Michigan to Emil and Lillie Yakel. After serving in the Army Medical Corps during World War II, he graduated from the University of Michigan in 1947. Following his graduation he joined The Dow Chemical Co., where he had a long and distinguished career and held a variety of positions, including roles in the medical department, nuclear and basic research, and retired from the toxicology laboratory in 1982.

Howard is survived by his wife, Elsa; his children James (Karen) Yakel, Christine Branson, David (Julia) Yakel, Jayn (John) Donalds and Thomas (Kim) Yakel; sister-in-law Ruth Anderson; nine grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. He is also survived by his stepchildren, Peggy (Don) Cook, Mary Beth (Tim) Brewer, Charles (Sue) Kramer, and Trish (Brad) Martin; nine step grandchildren and five step great grandchildren. Howard was preceded in death by his first wife, Sarah Yakel.

Memorial services will be held at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2014, at Chapel Lane Presbyterian Church, 5501 Jefferson Avenue, Midland, with The Rev. Dr. Rhonda Myers, officiating. Visitation will be held at the church from 1:30 p.m. until the time of the service. Interment will take place at a later date at Pinconning Township Cemetery.
