Jo Ann Charters Waltz passed away peacefully Thursday, the 27th of March 2014, at her home in Paradise Valley, Ariz. Jo Ann was born in Bay City on Nov. 4, 1941, to the late Mary Ellen and Harry Stanley Charters Jr. She graduated in 1959 from St. James High School in Bay City, where she was valedictorian of her class. Jo Ann then attended the University of Michigan School of Dental Hygiene. She received her certification in 1961 and was inducted into the Sigma Phi Alpha honor society.

Jo Ann then married Dirk Donald Waltz and they shared 37 years together and had four wonderful children. Jo Ann's children were always her highest priority and during their school years she chose to focus on her role as a loving mother.

Jo Ann then went on to pursue her passion in the health care field and received her registered nurse degree at Delta College where she was the top nursing student graduating with the highest honors. She was the first recipient of the Frances Goll Mills award for excellence in nursing. Jo Ann shared her knowledge and experience with students as a clinical instructor at Delta College and area hospitals. She went on to become assistant director of nursing and obstetrics at Saginaw General Hospital where it became her mission to provide excellent care to mothers and infants. More recently, Jo Ann provided mentoring to local troubled teens and helped establish the Midland County Citizens Probation Council.

Jo Ann was a supporting member of many community and national organizations. She was a corporate member of the MidMichigan Health board. She was also a committee member of Fund Development at MidMichigan Medical Center. Many friendships were made during her years as a Privileged Member of Midland Monday Club. Jo Ann was also a long time member of the Midland Country Club.

She was a dynamic, caring and beautiful person with an enormous heart with much love to give. After Jo Ann's death, it was discovered that she had a gift that even her family was unaware of: She was a poet. Here is just a sampling of her gift. Her family would like to share one of her poems with the community that she dearly loved.

THE POWER

OF YOUR SMILE

It summons the tulips to announce the Spring

It signals the leaves to color the Fall

Yes, it's the Power of Your Smile.

It delights the infant embracing new life

It says farewell to a dying friend

Yes, it's the Power of Your Smile.

It gives serenity to the sun setting over the desert

It gives majesty to the mountains towering into the sky

Yes, it's the Power of Your Smile.

And to me, one who cares

It makes each day brighter, and each night less lonely

It gives me life, the strength to move forward,

The desire to live the dream

Yes, it's the Power of Your Smile.
