Mildred G. (Millie) Yehle, 93, passed away on Feb. 12, 2014, from complications related to her dementia. Millie was born in Detroit on June 27, 1920, the daughter of Robert and Myrtle (Gould) Hoff. She grew up there, along with an older brother and younger sister.
Following graduation from Eastern High School, she enrolled in Kalamazoo College and received her BA degree in English Literature.
While in college she met her future husband, Eugene (Gene) Yehle. They were married in Detroit, June 14, 1943. Gene, a cadet in the Army Air Force, was stationed in the Boston area which became their first home.
As a war bride, Millie worked at Liberty Mutual Insurance Company and at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Following his transfer to Washington, D.C., they moved to Arlington, Va., where she was employed in the U.S. Army Casualty Office.
In 1946, after the end of World War II, Gene obtained a position on the faculty of the University of Michigan Business School. That meant a move and a new life in Ann Arbor with their son Richard who was born in Walter Reed Hospital. Millie soon joined the Faculty Wives' Club and the American Association of University Women.
With twins, Janet and Donald, born at University Hospital, she also found time to be a Cub Scout Leader.
The family moved to Midland in 1957 when Gene took a job with The Dow Chemical Co. There Millie became active in community service through Midland Kings Daughters and Sons, Memorial Presbyterian Church, Midland Hospital and Seed & Sod Garden Club.
She also renewed her interest in ceramics that had begun years earlier in high school, and developed other hobbies including needlepoint and flower arranging, but always saving time to enjoy her children and grandchildren.
Millie was preceded in death by her parents; her sister Marian Mathieu; and her brother William Hoff.
Surviving are her husband, Gene; three children, Richard (Mary) Yehle of Houston, Texas, Janet (David Brigle) Caldwell of Battle Creek, Donald (Karen) Yehle of West Lafayette, Ind.; six grandchildren, Michael Caldwell, Carolyn (Daniel Steinkoler) Yehle, Susan (Stephen) Ritter, Sarah (Benjamin) Keil, Kathleen (Grant) Robinson, Stephanie Brigle; great-grandchildren, Mathew and Emily Ritter and Max Steinkoler.
