Dr. Richard G. Barstow, 93, died Dec. 8, 2013, in Sedona, Ariz. Dick was the youngest of six children, born to Dr. E.O. and Florence Barstow of Midland. Dick graduated from Midland High School and Michigan State University
, and then earned his medical degree from the University of Michigan
in 1944. Dick served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps from 1945-1947.
Dick practiced medicine in Goodrich, and later as a family practitioner in Gaylord, from 1952-1966. Following a psychiatric residency at Traverse City State Hospital from 1966-1969, Dick moved to Denver, Colo., where he practiced psychiatry at Denver General Hospital until he retired in 1972.
Dick is survived by his wife, Vada, who lives in Arizona, where they have lived since 1976. Dick has five children, two step-children, twenty-one grandchildren, and nineteen great-grandchildren. His sister, Ruth Barstow Dixon, is nearly 100 years old and is the last surviving sibling of the family.
Funeral services will take place at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 18th, at the Ware Smith Woolever Funeral Home, 1200 West Wheeler Street. The Rev. Tim Yankee will officiate, with graveside burial rites in Midland Cemetery.
