Russell C. Fetters, 85, of Sanford, died at the Toni & Trish House on May 5, 2012.

Russell was born on July 30, 1926, on the family farm in Oceana County, where he was raised, to the late Everett and Hazel (Cargill) Fetters. Russell married his sweetheart, Maxine St. John.

Russell served in the U.S. Navy on the Coral Sea during World War II. After being honorably discharged from the Navy, he moved to Sanford, worked for a local bowling alley and Collison Construction before becoming a millwright for The Dow Chemical Co. He took a medical leave and retired in 1978. Russell also served as the Jerome Township building inspector as well as the dog enumerator.

Russell loved to travel and camp, staying either in his trailer or motels. For Russell no dirt road was too rough. He loved to barbeque a good steak and chicken. Russell was very determined to do the right thing. He loved helping people and would always show up to support friends in every way. Russell especially enjoyed the company of family and friends and finding new ones.

Russell is survived by his loving wife, Maxine; daughter, DiAnn (Larry) Bunting; son, Danny (Rebecca) Fetters; grandchildren, Taylor and Morgan Bunting; sisters, Lorna Reeds and Eunice Merritt; brother, Willard (Luella) Fetters; friends, the Bert and Betty Inman Family and Donna Witkop. Russell was preceded in death by his sister, Evelyn Jenkins; and his brother, Alfred Fetters.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 12, 2012, at 11 a.m., at Smith-Miner Funeral Home, 2700 W. Wackerly, with Chaplain Chris Lauckner officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 9:30 until the time of the service.

In lieu of flowers, those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider the Toni and Trish House. Online condolences can be given at smithminer.com.
