Vern Darrell DeBolt, 81, of Midland, died on Saturday, Jan. 19, 2013, at the Saginaw Veterans Hospital. He was born Oct. 17, 1931, to the late Vern and Ina (Babcock) DeBolt in Midland County.
After he graduated from Midland High, he took courses at Chicago Tech. Vern worked for The Dow Chemical Co. until he joined the U.S. Navy
in 1952, but received a medical discharge that same year. On Jan. 31, 1953, Vern married his sweetheart, Shirley Jane Campbell, in Midland. In 1954, Vern was drafted into the U.S. Army
for the Korean War
. He was honorably discharged in 1956.
Vern worked as a draftsman at Patuxant River, Md., on the steam catapult. He worked as a contract engineer for many years until he opened his own business, DeBolt Design, in 1972. DeBolt Design later merged with Tad Tech and he worked there until he retired in 1990. Vern helped build the Jefferson Avenue Church of God in 1971. He loved hunting, fishing, camping, golf and softball. Vern was a loving father and grandfather.
Vern is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Shirley; his daughter, Darla (Jim) Kaminski; sons, Darvin (Vicki), Michael (Melody) and Brian; 11 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his sister, Phyllis (Roberts) Austin.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2013, at North Point Ministries, 5920 Jefferson Ave, Midland, with Pastors Allen Campbell and Mel Hunt officiating. The family will receive friends at Smith-Miner Funeral Home, 2700 W. Wackerly, on Tuesday, from 4-7 p.m., and on Wednesday at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of the service. Military honors will be under the auspices of the U.S. Army and the Midland County Veterans. Burial will take place at Homer Township Cemetery.
