Betty Elam Riddle Obituary
BETTY ELAM RIDDLE nee BETTY JANE ELAM October 22, 1919 to June 2, 2012 Born in St. Louis, Missouri to Russell Woodbridge Elam and Inez Valle; one of two children. Betty Riddle received a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature in 1939 from the University of California at Los Angeles where she was a member of the Alpha Gamma Delta sorority. She married Laurence Maynadier Riddle in Yuma, Arizona on April 9th, 1939. The family moved to Riverside in 1956, so that Laurence, an architect, could join the Architects and Engineers office at the University of California at Riverside and help construct the Riverside campus in its early years. Betty died peacefully in Riverside, California on June 2nd, 2012 following a long illness. She is survived by her three children Christopher Riddle of Amherst, Massachusetts, Robert Riddle of Forest Falls, California, and Anne Riddle Borchardt of Riverside, California, by her niece Katherine Valle Elliott of Oslo, Norway, and by six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Betty was a primary school teacher in the Riverside Unified School District where she taught first, second, and third grades at Jefferson and Washington Elementary Schools until her retirement in 1977. She loved sports, particularly baseball and tennis, saying that the beginning of baseball season made her feel optimistic about the world in general. She rooted for the Angels, the Dodgers, and for her all time favorite tennis-player, Roger Federer. Betty herself played tennis with friends until she was in her 70's. She also played piano, and enjoyed opera and classical music. Betty wrote two books for children and an historical fiction screenplay about Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. She had many enthusiasms and interests, but her primary focus was on her beloved husband, family, and pets. She believed in being good and doing the right thing. A memorial celebration will be held in her honor on Saturday, July 14th from 4 -6 pm at the Sunkist Center at Citrus State Historic Park in Riverside, California.
