Joyce Elma Cumming Moe Obituary
JOYCE ELMA CUMMING MOE was born September 3, 1928 in Flint, Michigan and went to be with the Lord on Sunday, March 16, 2014. She passed away peacefully at her home with her children and husband present to help her along on her final journey. The people who knew her always said that she was a fighter and would never give up. She had a strong faith in the Lord, which gave her strength to endure her struggle. Joyce has had a long battle with cancer for 15 years. It started as a Stage III cancer of the right breast. The right breast was removed and following the surgery, she had to bear the rigors of both radiation and chemotherapy. She conquered the breast cancer problem only to be diagnosed with cancer of the left kidney a year later. The left kidney was removed and a year later it was found that the kidney cancer cells had spread to her lungs. She was placed on chemotherapy, specific for kidney cancer, and had remained on this for the past five years until her death. The chemotherapy had caused Joyce serious and painful side effects for which she endured with little complaint. Joyce was born to Walter and Luella Cumming at Flint, MI in 1928 and graduated from Central High in 1946. Immediately after, she was enrolled in the Edward W. Sparrow School of Nursing in Lancing, Michigan. She graduated as a R.N. in 1950 and went on to take a post-graduate course in operating room techniques in New York City. She studied and worked at the N.Y. Poly Clinic and the Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center. She loved New York and had many pleasant experiences there. In 1954 Joyce returned to Michigan to care for her mother who had Alzheimer's. She also worked in the operating room at the University of Michigan Medical School. It was there that she met her husband-to-be over an operating table. All Gil could see was Joyce's eyes and her ankles and that was all that it took. They were married two months later in Flint, Michigan on September 12, 1954. Joyce and Gil would have celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary this coming September. Gil was entering his third year at McGill University Medical School so he and Joyce moved to Montreal, Quebec. Joyce worked there for two years as a R.N and subsequently as a secretary where she received a higher salary! The two then moved to Denver, Colorado where Gil completed his Internship, and Joyce worked for a proctologist. Both loved to ski and they had many pleasurable times together at Vail, Aspen, and many other ski resorts. Joyce was an excellent skier who would tackle some hills that even Gil was hesitant to go down. They then moved to Oakland, California where Gil finished his four years of resident training as an Ob-Gyn specialist. During that time their daughter, Leslie was born November 10, 1958. She was born breech and Gil kept telling Joyce, " Wait, wait, wait, the camera isn't set up yet"! Even though Gil had spent two years in the Merchant Marines at the end of W.W. II as a pharmacist mate, it was not enough to spare him from the draft. Gil was inducted into the Navy as an Ob-Gyn specialist and his duty took him to the Marine Corps. Supply Center in Barstow, California. Joyce and Gil spent two years in Barstow and during that time their son, Greg was born breech in a Quonset Hut on December 8, 1960. Gil retired from the Navy as a Lt. Cdr. and they moved to Banning in 1962 where Gil practiced for 14 years and Joyce served as his part time nurse. Joyce & Gil moved to Hemet in December, 1976. Joyce again served as his part time nurse at his office on Morton Place. She retired from medicine when Gil retired and closed his office in 1992. Her final place of abode was 1720 Almond Tree St. on the Seven Hills Golf Course where Joyce delighted in gardening and watching the humming birds and finches at the feeders. Her most enjoyable moments came when she saw a red tailed hawk soaring up in the skies or perched in a tree. Joyce has two children, Leslie and Greg. Leslie and Joyce have had many "girl" times together and has given Joyce two grandchildren, Taylor and Jackson. Greg is the apple of Joyce's eye and vica versa. He has given Joyce her third grandchild, Courtney. Joyce has been a blessing to her whole family. She was wise and a perfect helpmate. She was very easy to get along with and that was the secret to her successful marriage to Gil. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Baptist Christian School Scholarship Fund, 26089 Girard St, Hemet, CA 92543 or P.E.O. Scholarship Chapter VC, 328 Harrington Court, Hemet, CA 92545.
