Steven C. Twigg Obituary
Steven C Twigg, US Coast Guard Veteran, Retired Fire Captain, and Local Legend passed away on July 29th surrounded by his family. He was 66. Steven was born in 1947 in Oceanside and graduated from Huntington Beach High School in 1964. He served in the Coast Guard from 1966 to 1970. In 1968 he married his childhood sweetheart. He was a master carpenter who spent hours in the garage making everything from bookshelves and coffee tables to a cradle and fort for his grandson Samuel. An accomplished sailor, he participated in the Newport to Ensenada Race and made several family treks to Catalina Island. He was a fisherman, skeet-shooter, horseback rider and world traveler. Steven was also a renowned jokester, storyteller, and soccer fan who managed to make friends wherever he went. He retired after 30 years with the Costa Mesa Fire Dept and spent his time reading nautical history, watching cowboy movies, and playing the bagpipes at festivals, parades, and weddings (occasionally marching visiting family members out to their cars). Steven lived a robust and adventure-filled life, leaving us with incredible memories and a lot to talk about. If we could get him to sit still long enough, we were treated to tales of his antics growing up with his four brothers, patrolling the Aleutian Islands on a Coast Guard cutter, riding camels with his wife in Jerusalem, wandering around Europe with his sister, and of course, pilgrimages to Twiggtown, Maryland. When told of his passing, a long-time family friend said it best quoting William Shedd, "A ship is safe in the harbor, but that's not what a ship is for." 'The Captain' is survived by his wife Sandra, sons David (Gabriella) & Robert, grandsons Jake & Samuel, nephew Scott (Janelle), niece Kimberly (Brian), brothers Timothy & William, sister Anne, mother Sarah and father Kenneth. Services will be held at 10:00, Friday August 9th at Shepherd of Life Lutheran Church in Lake Elsinore where Steven was a founding member and former Congregation President.
