Vernon H. Courtney Obituary
VERNON H. COURTNEY Vernon passed away October 18, 2013 in Fresno, California, at age 92. He is survived by his wife, Floye Courtney of Fresno; his brothers Alfred Courtney, Melvin Courtney, and Roy Courtney; his sisters Lorraine Thorley, Thelma McCabe, and Helen Wensel; his grandsons Larry and Lonney Joe Sisk; 3 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild. He is preceded in death by his parents Bertha and Walter Courtney, sister Alice Kasinger, daughter Joan Sisk, and great grand-daughter Heather Sisk. Vernon was brought into this world on August 1, 1921 in Yanush, Oklahoma, and in 1938 he boarded a bus with his family to make the trek to Riverside, California. There he met and fell in love with his wife of 71 years, Floye, and they started a family shortly thereafter. In 1942 Vernon took a break from working at Pacific Bell to answer the country's call to duty during WWII by joining the U.S. Army and serving in the 59th Battalion in the Signal Corps. During the war, he served in Normandy, Bastonge, the Ardennes, and under General Patton. After receiving an honorable discharge he went back to work for the phone company where he worked as a foreman for 40 years. In 2000 Vern and Floye moved to Fresno to be near their daughter and grandsons. In Fresno he enjoyed the last years of his life as the family Patriarch. Vernon will be laid to rest at Crestlawn Mortuary in Riverside, California at 1 pm on Saturday, November 2nd.
