GALESBURG - Bruce Edward Gerber, 58, of Galesburg passed away at 11:28 p.m. Sunday, May 12, 2013, at OSF St. Mary Medical Center in Galesburg. He was formerly of East Peoria.
He was born June 2, 1944, in Galesburg to Orrie and Shirley (Livengood) Gerber.
Surviving are one daughter, Sarah Gerber of Creve Coeur; one son, Jacob (Janell Teuerle) Gerber of East Peoria; two grandsons, Jaxson and Keegan; and one sister, Carol Krumwiede of Washington.
Bruce was preceded in death by his parents.
He had worked for Illinois Department of Corrections for 13 years, retiring in 2013.
Bruce was in the United States Marine Corps from July 22, 1972, to July 11, 1976, during the Vietnam War, serving as amphibious assault vehicle crew chief, Co. D 2nd amphibious Assault Bn., force troops, fleet marine force, military prisoner escort, 2nd amphibious Assault Bn. Camp Lejune, N.C., marine embassy guard-security force Operation Frequent Wind, Saigon, South Vietnam, Marine embassy guard-security force Operation Eagle Pull, Nom Pen Cambodia, and corporal of the guard, Court House Bay area, Camp Lejune, N.C.
Cremation will be accorded by Preston-Hanley Funeral Homes & Crematory in Creve Coeur. There will be no visitation. A service will be announced at a later date.
Memorial contributions may be made to a trust fund for his grandchildren that is being established at Associated Bank in East Peoria.

He was a one of a kind friend who would do anything for you. He was a dedicated officer and marine who could make anyone laugh. You will be missed, R.I.P. Bruce.

I only got to work with Bruce a handful of times, but he was a bright, witty guy and a fine officer. He left us way too soon.

My sincere condolences to all Carol, Kimberly,Sarah and Jacob. I remember us growing up together as cousins here in Eureka and the last time I saw him.. riding off into the sunset on his Harley ( 2007? ).. :(
