EAST PEORIA - Cecil H. Van Etten Jr., 68, of Savoy, Ill., formerly of East Peoria, died at 5:39 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 3, 2014, at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana, Ill., after a brief and sudden illness.
He was born on July 5, 1946, in Peoria, Ill., to Cecil and Freeda Van Etten. On July 15, 1967, Cecil married Carolyn Flurer in Washington, Ill.
Surviving are his wife, Carolyn "Carol"; sons, Craig of Herrin, Ill., and Chad (Tina) of Dublin, Ohio; one granddaughter, Carsyn; one stepgranddaughter, Kayla; brothers, Dr. James (Geraldine) Van Etten of Lincoln, Neb., and Dr. Hans (Martha) Van Etten of Tucson Ariz.; and sister, Twila (Bowman) Kelly of Raleigh, N.C.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Richard; and his parents.
He attended East Peoria Community High School, Class of 1964, and Cornell College.
Cecil joined the United States Marine Corps from 1966 to 1968. After his honorable discharge, Cecil graduated from Southern Illinois University, School of Engineering, Class of 1973. He then worked for the state of Illinois Environmental Protection Agency, Public Water Supplies, from 1973 until his retirement in 2002.
Cecil enjoyed working on small engines and weekly excursions to his woodland property in East Peoria. Recreational time would be spent discussing life lessons at Old Orchard Lanes in Savoy.
Visitation will be at Morgan Memorial Home, 1304 Regency Drive W., Savoy, from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 7.
Memorials may to be made to one's choosing. At a later date, there will be a celebration of life event in remembrance of Cecil.
