PEORIA - Charles E. Jones, 80, of Peoria passed away at 4:36 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2014, at UnityPoint Health-Proctor.
He was born on March 1, 1933, in Peoria to the late Robert and Mary Smith Jones. He married Louise Finnie of Peoria in August of 1956. She survives him.
He graduated from Manual High School, class of 1952, where he excelled in a number of sports, mainly basketball. Upon graduation, he was drafted into the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict. He was honorably discharged. He attended the University of Illinois and Notre Dame University.
He is also survived by twin sons, Ronald C. (Monica) of Peoria and Donald E. of North Carolina; and three grandsons, Niles, Nevin and Donald Jr. He was the proud uncle of many nieces and nephews. He will always be fondly remembered by family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and four sisters.
He was one of the first African-American bowlers in Peoria. Having been an avid bowler, he was inducted into the Greater Peoria USBL Hall of Fame in November of 2008. He was also a board member.
Charlie loved playing cards with friends.
Charlie retired from the Peoria County Sheriff's Department as a lieutenant. After retiring, he started mister J's Investigation and Security.
Charles was a lifelong member of St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church.
Services will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2014, at St. Paul M.B. Church, located at 114 W Forrest Hill Ave., Peoria, Ill., at 11 a.m., with visitation starting one hour prior at 10 a.m. Pastor Deveraux Hubbard will officiate. Entombment will take place in the Parkview Mausoleum, where full military rites will be accorded.
