PEKIN - Christopher A. Shingleton, 24 of Pekin passed away at 7:28 a.m. Thursday, April 4, 2013 at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria.
He was born Dec. 3, 1988, in Charleston, S.C., to Lloyd Shingleton and Teressa (Donaho) Bortell.
Surviving are his mother and stepfather, Teressa (and Robert) Bortell of Forest City; his father, Lloyd (and Tess) Shingleton of Goose Creek, S.C.; one brother, Jeremy Shingleton of Forest City; two sisters, Lexus and Kaitlyn Bortell, both of Forest City; maternal grandparents, Terry and Eileen Donaho of Havana; and stepgrandparents, Eldon and Sheron Bortell of Forest City.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents.
Christopher was a 2007 graduate of Midwest Central High School in Manito.
He was a member of the Illinois Army National Guard attaining the rank of sergeant. He presently was serving with HHC 2-130 Infantry in Marion. He previously served with CO A1-178 Infantry of Bartonville. His unit was activated and he proudly served overseas with Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan from Oct. 28, 2008, until July 25, 2009.
Christopher enjoyed the outdoors, playing softball and paintball. He also loved Halloween and creating and wearing costumes and BACON.
His funeral will be at 4 p.m. Monday, April 8, 2013, at Preston-Hanley Funeral Homes & Crematory in Pekin. Tyler Helfers will officiate. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Military honors will be conducted by the Illinois Army National Guard Honors Team. Cremation will be accorded following the services.
