Claire Cooper Obituary

MAQUON - Claire R. Cooper, 91, of rural Maquon died at 6 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 17, 2012, at his residence.

He was born on Feb. 5, 1921, in Alexis, Ill., to Howard and Sadie (Line) Cooper. He married Dorothy Dikeman in 1942. She preceded him in death in 1988. He then married Alice Owen in 1994. She also preceded him in death in 2007.

Survivors include four children, Connie (Ron) Newton of Mena, Ark., David Cooper of Gerlach, Nev., Perry (Linda) Cooper of Yates City and Howard Cooper of Maquon; 11 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Cletus and Gail.

Claire first worked for Butler Manufacturing prior to entering the Army Air Forces in 1942. He served at Love Field, Dallas, Texas, and was stationed in Burma, working on bombers and transports. He was promoted to sergeant and served as crew chief.

After returning from service in 1946, he took up farming with his father, and continued doing so until his retirement.

He had been a member of Faith Presbyterian Church in Yates City, was a member of Maquon American Legion, Maquon VFW and the Knox County Farm Bureau.

He was an avid fisherman, hunter and enjoyed bowling.

Cremation rites have been accorded. A memorial visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 24, at Oaks-Hines Funeral Home in Elmwood. Graveside services, with military honors, will follow at 2 p.m. Sunday at Yates City Cemetery. The Rev. Kevin VanTine will officiate.
