Dennis Denekas Obituary

CHILLICOTHE - Dennis Allen Denekas, 65, of Chillicothe passed away at 3:10 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2014, at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria.

He was born Jan. 25, 1949, in Davenport, Iowa, the son of John A. and Frances (Hayes) Denekas. He married Diane L. Shirk on Sept. 6, 1969, in Davenport, Iowa.

Surviving are his wife; two children, Darci (James) Gentry of Pekin, Ill., and Sean (Heather) Denekas of Groveland, Ill.; two grandchildren, Nicholas and Nathan; one sister, Sahron Keiffert of Davenport, Iowa; and one brother, John (Debbie) Denekas III of Dyersville, Iowa. Also surviving are his father-in-law, George Shirk of Rock Island, Ill.; two sisters-in-law, Mona (Ken) Cassat of Milan, Ill., and Marci Shirk of Davenport, Iowa; and one brother-in-law, Jerry (Grace) Shirk of Rock Island, Ill.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Dennis graduated from West High School in Davenport and attended St. Ambrose College.

He worked 42 years for Caterpillar at the Tech Center in Mossville.

He was of the Baptist faith and a past member of the Chillicothe Rotary Club.

Dennis was an avid big game hunter. He traveled all over the world for his big game, hunting in Africa, Canada, Wyoming and Colorado. He enjoyed restoring guns and building model trains. He was in the process of building a model railroad for his grandchildren.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 23, 2014, at Weber-Hurd Funeral Home in Chillicothe. A funeral service will follow the visitation, starting at 3:30 p.m., with Pastor Craig Hislope officiating. Cremation rites will be accorded following the service. Inurnment will be held at a later date in the Chillicothe City Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Chillicothe Township Senior Transportation or to the Heritage Health Activity Department.
