EDELSTEIN - Denny "Hillbilly" Broadway, 65, of Edelstein died at 12:55 a.m. Tuesday, April 16, 2013, at OSF Richard L. Owens Hospice Home, Peoria.
He was born April 1, 1948, in Columbia, Tenn., to Wesley Claude and Hazel (Luckey) Broadway. He married Betty Jo Medearis on May 15, 1998, in Toulon. She survives.
Also surviving are one son, Wes (Hilary Field) Broadway of Bozeman, Mont.; one daughter, Jenni (Shane) Elder of Princeville; two grandchildren, Hunter "Rascal" Elder and Conner "Zeker" Elder; two brothers, Aubrey (Patricia) Broadway of Jackson, Tenn., and Sammie (Laura) Broadway of Lavina, Tenn.; and two sisters, Cynthia (Walter) Overholt of Smyrna, Tenn., and Sondra (Bo) Beard of Medina, Tenn.
His parents and one sister, Lois Blankenship, and one brother, Eldon Broadway preceded him in death.
Having grown up in Tennessee, he moved to Peoria, Ill., in 1966, and hired on as a pipe fitter for Caterpillar Inc., where he worked for 32 years. He retired in 1998. Denny was a proud and devoted member of the UAW Local 974, IN GOOD STANDING.
He also served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War on the USS Valley Forge, and was a member of the Dunlap American Legion Post 1078 and the Princeville VFW Post 1255.
For the past six years he enjoyed farming with his buddy Bill Shaw in Dunlap. In addition to his favorite pastimes - working with antique trucks and engines, spending time with his grandsons, and raising a sometimes-exotic garden - he loved hanging with his buds at Christie's Den in Dunlap, where the "Nurrrrses" kept him from getting thirsty.
The family would like to thank the staff at the Illinois Cancer Care Center and OSF Richard L. Owens Hospice Home, as well as the many friends and family who offered support through Denny's battle with cancer. Special thanks to our guardian angel, Beth Pullen - you helped us in so many ways.
Memorial service will be 1 p.m. Saturday, April 20, 2013, at Dunlap American Legion. Rev. David Stamerjohn will officiate. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, April 19, 2013, at Hammitt-Hott Funeral Home in Princeville. Cremation will be accorded following the services.
