PEKIN - Donald H. VanHorn, 89, of Pekin passed away at 8:05 a.m. Monday, Oct. 7, 2013, at his residence, surrounded by his loving family.
Born May 30, 1924, in Pekin to Henry J. and Mildred F. (Jacobs) VanHorn, he married Gladys F. Zimmerman on April 6, 1946, in Pekin. She died on June 19, 2011, in Pekin.
He also was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Henry Martin VanHorn; and one sister, Betty Jane Smith.
Surviving are five daughters, Sharon (Gary) Waldsmith of Washington and Donna Edwards, Susan (Robert) Irby, Vicki (Robert) Friedrich and Kathy VanHorn, all of Pekin; seven grandchildren, Jeffrey (Stef) Irby, Tim (Amber) Irby, Justin (Jenny) Waldsmith, Kendra Waldsmith, Stacie (Paul) Osborne, Brett Wiebler and John Friedrich; 11 great-grandchildren; and one brother, Bert VanHorn of Danbury, Wis.
Don was a World War II Navy veteran.
He was employed at Standard Brands in Pekin for 24 years, until its closing in 1971. He then worked for the city of Pekin Sanitation Department for eight years and last worked for Sorce Enterprises (formerly DeHater) for 10 years, retiring in 1986. Don also worked 27 years at Pekin Autobody for a second job during his time at Standard Brands and with the city. Many will remember that Don served as the longtime auditor in Cincinnati Township for 40 years.
Don loved his grandchildren and enjoyed travel, especially wintering in Florida. He also liked to work in his yard and took pride in caring for his roses. He also liked to fish.
He was a retired member of Teamsters & Chauffeurs Union Local 627 in Peoria and a member of William Schaefer American Legion Post 44 in Pekin. Don was a former member of Pekin Elks Lodge 1271. He was a member of Normandale Reformed Church in Pekin.
His funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Preston-Hanley Funeral Homes & Crematory in Pekin. The Rev. Gary L. Ford will officiate. Visitation will be from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Lakeside Cemetery, with military rites accorded by the United States Navy and the Tazewell Area Ceremonial Team.
