PEKIN - Dorothy A. Murphy, 83, of Pekin passed away at 11:43 a.m. Monday, March 10, 2014, at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria.
She was born July 6, 1930, in Pekin to Edward and Clara (Powers) Murphy.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Donald E. Murphy; and one niece, Rene Courter.
Surviving are one nephew, Michael (Sandra) Murphy of Atlanta, Ga.; one niece, Rhonda (Arl) Snyder of Manito; many great-nieces and nephews; and several great-great-nieces and nephews.
A 1948 graduate of Pekin Community High School, Dorothy graduated from Bradley University in 1952 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration. She earned her Master of Science degree in Education from the University of Illinois in 1963. She also received a specialist certificate in guidance and counseling from both Illinois State University and Bradley.
Dorothy retired in 1992 from Pekin Community High School District 303 as a dean at East Campus, following 40 years in teaching, 29 of those years with PCHS. Dorothy began her teaching career in Delavan in 1952. Her retirement job was with Pekin Insurance for seven years.
She was a member of both the Illinois and National education associations. She also held many offices in the Pekin Teachers' Alliance and was a member and past president of the Altrusa Club in Pekin.
She was faithful and devoted member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Pekin, where she served as a Eucharistic Minister and Sacristan and in the hospital ministry. Dorothy considered it a true pleasure and privilege to serve Jesus, the priests, deacons and members of her congregation for so many years.
She loved spending time with her family and friends.
Her funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 15, 2014, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Pekin. Father Michael Andrejek will officiate. Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday at the Preston-Hanley Funeral Homes & Crematory in Pekin, with the recitation of the Rosary at 3:30 p.m. Burial will be in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Pekin.
