PEORIA - Mr. Frank Scott Campbell, 97, of Peoria, Ill., passed away from this life unto another peacefully at 10:27 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 22, 2012, at his residence.
Frank was born Feb. 27, 1915, in Peoria, Ill., to Peter and Lucy (Scott) Campbell. He married Iris Bell on May 18, 1939, and to that union two daughters were born. His beloved wife, Iris Campbell, preceded him in death Feb. 14, 1997.
Frank leaves to cherish his two loving daughters, Joyce Edwards and Mary Hooks, both of Peoria; two grandchildren, Lori (Malcolm) Cawthorne of Brookline, Mass., and Malcolm (Andrea) Hooks of Chicago; four great-grandchildren, Mariah and Nia Cawthorne, both of Brookline, Mass., Tyson and Jordan Hooks, both of Chicago, Ill.; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends who loved him.
Frank was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Peter Campbell Jr. and Thomas Campbell; and three sisters, Dr. Anne Campbell, Ruby Irving and Evril Blake.
Frank was a 1933 Manual High School graduate, where he was a star basketball player. He graduated in 1937 from the University of Michigan with a bachelor of science degree in education, and while a student became a member of Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity. After graduation, Frank remained an active member of the University of Michigan Alumni Association.
Frank was the associate director at the Carver Center for over 28 years and retired from the Insurance Claims Department at Caterpillar Inc. in 1980. After retirement, he remained an active member of the Caterpillar Retirees Club, where he served on the Board of Directors.
Frank loved to travel, read, attend sporting events and spend time with family and friends.
Frank was a member of the Illinois and National Recreation Association, NAACP and in 1998 was inducted in the African American Hall of Fame Museum in Peoria, Ill. Frank was a former member of Mount Zion Baptist Church in Peoria, Ill.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 29, 2012, at Mount Zion Baptist Church, with a visitation one hour prior beginning at 10 a.m. Pastor Alphonso Lyons Jr. will officiate. Frank will be laid to rest in Resurrection Cemetery.
