WEST PEORIA - George M. "Nick" Hampton, 63, of West Peoria died peacefully at his home at 7:18 a.m., Monday, Dec. 3, 2012.

Nick was born on March 11, 1949, in Yazoo City, Miss., to James Sr. and Rosie (Chalmers) Hampton. He married Jill Wahl on Dec. 18, 1982, in Jackson, Miss. She survives.

Also surviving are his daughter, Lani Hampton of Philadelphia, Miss.; two brothers, James Jr. (Jacquelyn) Hampton and Charles (Anita) Hampton, both of Jackson, Miss.; and five grandchildren, Janeka, Javarrius, Jaylen, Jozie and Jermaine.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Roosevelt Chalmers.

Nick was a 1967 graduate of Jim Hill High School and was involved in the family roofing business at a young age. He later went on to attend Mississippi Valley State University and Loop College in Chicago.

He served as an MP in the Army and served in Germany during the Vietnam War.

He later worked in manufacturing and a host of construction trades in the private sector. He also worked for the state of Mississippi.

Nick always showed compassion for others. He was a good shepherd to children and had a deep concern for the welfare of all God's creatures.

Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 10, 2012, at Wright & Salmon Mortuary. Chaplain Steve Drennan will officiate. Visitation will be an hour and a half prior to the service. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, West Peoria.
