DELAVAN - Gerald R. "Jerry" Hayes, 92, of Delavan passed away at 12:40 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 21, 2013, at Hopedale Hospital.
He was born May 23, 1921, on the family farm in rural Emden to Patrick "P.L." and Catharine "Kate" Ryan Hayes. He married Esther C. Connell on Nov. 24, 1945, in Pekin, and she passed away Jan. 2, 2001.
Surviving are three daughters, Mary Hayes of Denver, Colo., Julie Johanson of Minneapolis, Minn., and Sheila Hayes of Delavan; one son, J.T. (Laura) Hayes of Delavan; six grandchildren, Kate (Andrew) Bluestein of Chicago, Benjamin Hayes of Seattle, Wash., Kelsey Hayes of Chicago, Luke Hayes of Ames, Iowa, Annette (Michael) Gresham of Delavan and Dan (Danielle) Lessen of Richardton, N.D.; two sisters, Mary Allman of Monticello and Margaret Hayes of Hopedale; one sister-in-law, Patricia Hayes of Hopedale; special friends, Bev and Judge Groenewold of Delavan; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, the Rev. Patrick Hayes, C.S.V., Thomas Hayes and Leo Hayes.
Jerry attended the University of Illinois, and came home to farm during World War II and farmed until 1985.
He was a lifelong member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Delavan, a member of the Delavan School Board, a trustee for Prairie Creek Township, a supervisor for Logan County, a board member of the Farmers State Bank of Emden and a member of Delavan Education Foundation and Delavan Historical Society.
Cremation has been accorded. A memorial Mass will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 24, 2013, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Delavan. Msgr. Timothy Nolan will officiate. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Davis Mortuary in Delavan, followed by a prayer service at 8 p.m. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery in Delavan.
