Harriet Horton Obituary

PEORIA - Harriet Foster Horton, 99, of Peoria passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2013, at her home in Lutheran Hillside Village.

Harriet was born on July 24, 1914, in Chicago, Ill., to Alan A. and Lora (MacNaughton) Foster. She married Philip Zell Horton, Jr. on June 24, 1939, in Peoria.

Harriet is survived by her daughter, Nan Horton (Carter) Strickland of Fayetteville, N.Y.; her son, Philip Zell (Selby) Horton III of Germantown, Tenn.; five grandchildren, Carter Jr., Joy, Cynthia, Jacqueline Majors and Philip; six great-grandchildren, Julien, Maddie, Charlotte, Gordie, Sammy and Jesslyn; and one brother, Donald H. Foster of Woodland Hills, Calif.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Philip, in 1978; and one brother, Robert.

Harriet attended Bradley University, Northwestern University and the University of Washington. She received a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration. Harriet worked for Horton Engineering of Peoria as their bookkeeper until she retired. Harriet was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Cathedral in Peoria and the Alpha Phi Fraternity.

She was deeply involved in the community, including Lakeview Museum (now the Riverfront Museum), Bradley University, Methodist Hospital and its Service League, Peoria Symphony, South Side Mission, Junior League of Peoria, YWCA, American Red Cross, Common Place, Girl Scouts, Peoria Historical Society, As You Like It, Friday Club, Fine Art Society and The Opera. Harriet was also a member of the Peoria Country Club, Creve Coeur Club and the Ivy Club, where she enjoyed sailing with her family.

A memorial service and celebration of life will be held Saturday, Jan. 11, 2014, at 11 a.m. at St. Paul's Episcopal Cathedral in Peoria, with a reception following the service. Harriet has decided to donate her body to science. Cremation rites and interment will be held at a later date.
