WASHINGTON - Helen Campbell Berner, age 90, of Champaign, the mother of a Washington woman, died at 9:40 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 7, 2012, at Champaign County Nursing Home in Urbana.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2012, at Morgan Memorial Home, 1304 Regency Drive West in Savoy. Visitation will be for one-hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial will be in Roselawn Cemetery in Champaign.
Helen was born Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 30, 1922, in Gillespie, a daughter of Joseph and Mary Shaw Campbell. She married Marshall K. Berner on June 25, 1945, in Champaign. He died Oct. 14, 2001.
Survivors include two daughters, Bonnie (Jim) Nofsinger of Washington and Eloise Berner of Urbana; three grandchildren, Steve (Amy) Nofsinger of Glasford, Pamela (Roger) Miller of Washington, Ill., and Terrance (Andrea) Nofsinger of Chicago; and eight great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one son, Dean; three brothers, Alex, James and Stanley; and one sister, Esther.
Helen graduated in three years from the University of Illinois with degrees in home economics and gym education. She was the first in her family to receive a college degree by paying her own way, selling the Montgomery Ward Catalog door to door.
She was an excellent cook and looked forward to taking family fishing vacations in Wisconsin every year.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Champaign.
