PEORIA - Services for Hugh V. Firor, M.D., 83, formerly of Peoria, who passed away Monday, Sept. 24, 2012, in Cincinnati, Ohio, after a long illness will be Sunday, Oct. 28.
Born in Athens, Ga., he was a loving father, dedicated pediatric surgeon and teacher, last serving as chairman of the Department of Surgery for the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Peoria, where he retired in 1998 after receiving the college's Outstanding Service Award. He previously practiced at the Cleveland Clinic, Texas Tech University School of Medicine, Cook County Hospital in Chicago and the Red Cross War Memorial Children's Hospital in Capetown, South Africa.
Dr. Firor graduated from the University of Georgia, attended medical school at the University of Maryland and completed residencies at the University of Michigan Hospital, then at Yale New Haven Medical Center from 1955 to 1959.
He also served in the U.S. Naval Reserve, stationed in Coronado, Calif.
He was very active in the church, most recently at First Federated Church in Peoria, Ill., and served on committees for the American College of Surgeons and the American Pediatric Surgical Association.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Bourdon Firor.
He is survived by his daughter, Nancy, and son-in-law Rick Kibbee of Cincinnati, Ohio; son, Tom (and Kaska) Firor of Cincinnati; son, Randy (and Lynda) Firor of Tucson, Ariz.; a sister, Anne Firor Scott of Chapel Hill, N.C.; and six grandchildren.
A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 28, at Oconee Hill Cemetery in Athens, Ga.
