PEORIA - Jeanette "Parky" Mary Dodge, 91, formerly of Peoria, passed away Monday, Oct. 14, 2013, in Seneca, S.C.
She was born on Nov. 15, 1921, in St. Charles, Ill., to John Griggs and Clara Charlotte (Nielsen) Parquette. She was a great-granddaughter of Ephriam and Sarah Perkins, one of the first three families settling St. Charles in 1835, after a wagon journey from New Hampshire.
She graduated from the Chicago Cook County School of Nursing and received a BS in journalism and master's degree in English from the University of Illinois.
She was an RN at Chicago's Cook County Hospital, Urbana's McKinley Hospital and Rushville's Culbertson Memorial Hospital. She was a Bradley University English Department faculty member from 1966 to 1983, and academic advisement coordinator from 1972 to 1983.
She was a lector at St. Mark's Parish in Peoria, Ill., a lector at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church in Seneca, S.C., the first president of St. Mark's Coordinating Council, secretary for Peoria Diocesan Pastoral Council for two years and member of Peoria Cursillo in Christianity for 25 years. She was an orchid grower for 40 years and was an organizer of the Peoria Orchid Society and the Blue Ridge Orchid Society in South Carolina. She was a tour guide for the Pettengill-Morron House and Peoria Historical Society. She was a building committee member of St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church in Seneca, S.C.
She authored the books "Seven Cats Named Spot," in 2008, "Song of I Am," in 2009 and "The Key, The Magic Mirror and the Topaz Ring," in 2011. She was a Silver Medal winner of the Moonbeam Children's Book Award in 2011.
She married Jay True Dodge of Rushville, Ill., on Aug. 21, 1948, at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Champaign, Ill.
He survives along with eight children, James True (Constance) of Atlanta, Ga., Laura Dodge Havran (Richard) of Peoria, Ill., Mary Pat Dodge Heintzman (Michael) of Salem, Ore., Cynthia Dodge Smith (Michael) of North Bend, Wash., Rebecca Dodge Mollet (Arthur, deceased) of Escondido, Calif., Susan Dodge Cassidy (Lewis) of Bluemont, Va., Jay Michael Dodge (Diana) of Peoria, Ill., and Rachel Dodge Miller (Kevin) of Morton, Ill.; 13 grandchildren, James Patrick Dodge, Andrew Havran (Marie), Lisa Wink (Brian), Margaret Havran, Jonathon, Rebecca and Joseph Heintzman, Dylan Dodge Cassidy, William and Anthony Dodge, Jay True and Emelia and Finn Miller; one sister, Dorothy Scott (Bob) of St. Charles, Ill.; and four great-grandchildren, Morgan and Adam McClain, Reagan Mary Havran and Cora Leigh Wink.
Her grandson, Brian Dodge; and two sisters, Caroline Littlejohn and Olive Brock, preceded her in death.
The Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2013, at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church in Seneca, S.C., followed by a reception. Burial will be at Bethany Cemetery, Rushville, IL.
