ASTORIA - Joan France, age 88, of Astoria, Ill., passed away at 5:45 p.m. Wednesday, April 30, 2014, at Courtyard Estates in Bushnell, Ill.
She was born on Dec. 14, 1925, in Astoria, a daughter of Sidney and Agnes (Sicora) Baldry. Joan married Willis D. France on Oct. 21, 1950, in Geneseo, Ill. He preceded her in death on Nov. 20, 2013.
Joan also was preceded in death by her son-in-law, Larry Wherley; great-granddaughter, Rylie Wherley; and three sisters, June Miller, Elizabeth Crane and Sydney Lutz.
Surviving are two daughters, Patty Wherley of Astoria and Mary (and Aaron) Bowton of Canton, Ill.; her son, Mike (and Pam) France of Table Grove, Ill.; seven grandchildren, Chris (and Lindsey) Wherley, Scott (and Jennifer) Wherley, Brian (and Missy) France, Emily (and Bjorn) Olstad, Nick (and Lynde) France, Matthew (and Heidi) Fisk and Bradley (and Holly) Fisk; one stepgrandson, Austin Bowton; and 14 great-grandchildren.
Joan received her master's degree in education from the University of Illinois. She began her teaching career at Moline High School, teaching English and Spanish. She continued her career teaching Spanish at Astoria High School and Rushville High School, retiring in 1990.
She was a member of the University of Illinois Alumni Association, Illinois Retired Teachers Association, and the Astoria United Methodist Church.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 3, 2014, at Shawgo Memorial Home in Astoria. Pastor Steve Granadosin will officiate. Visitation will begin one hour prior to the services. Interment will be in the Astoria Cemetery.
