PEKIN - Joel Duane Graalum, 84, of Pekin passed away at 8:52 p.m. Monday, April 1, 2013, at Pekin Manor.
Born Dec. 2, 1928, in Valley City, N.D., to Walford and Alma (Hinschberger) Graalum, he married Geraldine "Jerry" Ozella on May 4, 1963, in Pekin. She survives.
Also surviving are one daughter, Julie (Richard) Lloyd of Plainfield; two grandsons, Ricky Lloyd and Ryan Lloyd, both of Plainfield; and one sister, Corrine (Dan) Loftus of Plymouth, Minn.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Wallace Graalum.
A graduate of St. Catherine's High School in Valley City, N.D., he went on to study at Valley City State University. He served in the United States Air Force.
Joel worked for Western Union, retiring as the Chicago district manager in 1985 after 28 years of service.
He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Pekin. He also was a member of the Knights of Columbus Archbishop Schlarman Council 3507, Pekin Moose Family Center 916 and a life member of the Elks Lodge in Valley City, N.D.
An avid reader, Joel enjoyed music and dancing and loved following sports, particularly the Chicago Bears.
Family was at the center of his life. Joel was known for his friendliness, sense of humor and kindness.
His funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Friday, April 5, 2013, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Pekin. Father James Pankiewicz will officiate. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Preston-Hanley Funeral Homes & Crematory in Pekin, with the recitation of the Rosary at 4:30 p.m. Burial will be in Lakeside Cemetery in Pekin.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Joseph Catholic Church, 303 S. Seventh St., Pekin, IL 61554 and designated for the "stair fund" (a project to build new stairs to the choir loft in the church).
