Delavan - John B. Lewis, 87, of rural Delavan passed away at 3:25 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 12, 2013, at OSF Richard L. Owens Hospice Home in Peoria.
He was born Sept. 11, 1926, in Hersman, Ill. to Dana M. and Gladys Hersman Lewis. He married Helen Elizabeth Allen on Aug. 15, 1944, at First Presbyterian Church in Delavan, and she survives.
Also surviving are three sons, John A. (Carrol) Lewis and Paul E. (Mindy) Lewis, both of Delavan, and James M. (Lyndee) Lewis of Neenah, Wis.; two daughters, Katherine A. (Boyde) Nelson of Monroe City, Ind., and Patricia E. (Kenneth) Nelson of Altona, Ill.; 15 grandchildren, Tina Tate, Lisa White, Erin Diekoff, Grant Lewis, Courtney Wilkinson, Kimberly Neuendorf, Jenny Pierson, Mark Hendricks, Joy Watson, Kay Raffety, David Nelson, Brian Nelson, Nicole Nelson, Jimy Lewis, and Matt Lewis; 20 great grandchildren; four brothers, Dana M. (Anita) Lewis, Jr., of McHenery, Ill., David Richard (Cheri Lee) Lewis of Elgin, Ill., George J. (Joan) Lewis of Quincy, Ill., and Charles E. (Margaret) Lewis of Mendota, Ill.; four sisters, Jean H. Delap of Quincy, Ill., Ruth M. Henderson of Ashville, N.C., Anne E. (David) Ford of Phoenix, Ariz., and Mary A. (John) Garland of Pullman, Wash.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers-in-law, Keith Delap and John Henderson.
John taught high school agriculture and FFA for six years at Barry and Waterman, Ill. John's love of farming took him from his teaching career to return to farming as a grain and livestock farmer. His passion of educating youth continued as he served as a 4-H leader and a lifelong supporter of FFA.
He served in the U.S. Army Air Corp during WWII, where he was stationed in Germany.
He was a lifelong member of the First Presbyterian Church in Delavan, where he served as a deacon and elder.
He was a member of the Tazewell County Pork Producers, Delavan Rotary Club, where he served as president and assistant Rotary Governor, Meals on Wheels, Senior Meals and the Delavan Fall Festival Committee.
He enjoyed traveling, gardening and spending time with extended family.
His funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 16, 2013, at First Presbyterian Church in Delavan. Pastor Paul Kucera will officiate. Visitation will be from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the church. Burial will be in Prairie Rest Cemetery in Delavan.
