SPRINGFILED - Lawnie Walter Goff, 92, of Springfield, Ill., passed away and into the arms of Jesus on Friday, April 19, 2013, at the Illinois Veterans home in Quincy, Ill.
He was born Aug. 29, 1920, in Nokomis, Ill., to Walter Lee and Alice (Greear) Goff.
He was the oldest of 10 children. Four children passed in infancy. The other five were sisters Ellen Jackson, Margaret Sicilia and Mary McDermott; and brothers Harold and Dale Goff.
He married Betty Anspaugh on April 6, 1946.
She preceded him in death on Jan. 26, 2013. Also preceding him in death were one grandson, Paul Eric Turner, and one granddaughter, Christa Rose Reed.
Survivors include two daughters, Carol Ann (James) Turner of Princeville, Ill., and Doris Jean (Wallace) Reed of Springfield, Ill.; seven grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Lawnie was a United States Army Veteran during WWII, and after the war worked as a machinist at Fiat-Allis, retiring after 30 years of service. During this time he also coached Little League baseball for 5 years. After retirement he worked for Lucky Lady Laundromat part time.
He was a long-standing member of Immanuel Lutheran Church. Lawnie was a member of VFW Post 4763. He was an avid hunter, fisherman and Cardinals fan but loved all sports.
Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, April 23, 2013, at Staab Funeral Home. He will lie in state from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 24, at Immanuel Lutheran Church. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 24, 2013, at Immanuel Lutheran Church with the Rev. Darrell Debowey officiating. Burial will follow in Camp Butler National Cemetery, where Sangamon County Interveterans will conduct military honors.
