Lawrence Brown Obituary

MORTON - Lawrence R. "Larry" Brown, 91, of Morton died at 5:32 a.m. Tuesday, June 24, 2014, at Rosewood Care Center in East Peoria.

He was born Jan. 2, 1923, in Carlock, Ill., to Jesse E. and Mabel (Hefler) Brown. He married Frieda Knoll on May 4, 1946, in East St. Louis, Ill. She preceded him in death on Nov. 13, 2004.

He also was preceded in death by a brother, Ralph; two infant brothers, Jesse and Robert; and two sisters, Virginia Turbett and Ruth Davis.

Surviving are one brother, Earl (Mary) Brown of Morton; 16 nieces and nephews; and his dearest friend, Harold Peters.

He enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Forces on Sept. 8, 1941, at 18 years of age. He trained to be an airplane mechanic at Chanute Field and served in New Guinea and Australia. There, they formed a transport squadron to provide transportation for troops, ammunition and supplies. He flew 97 combat missions as an engineer on C-47 planes. He was honorably discharged as a master sergeant with three stripes in August of 1945. He then joined the Air National Guard in Peoria, where they were forming a new squadron at the Peoria Airport. He finished out his 20 years in Dayton, Ohio, at Wright Patterson Air Force Base and retired from the Air Force through the Air National Guard in Ohio in 1996. After retirement, he worked at Roecker Cabinet in Morton as a cabinetmaker.

Lawrence was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church in Morton.

He loved music all of his life and developed an extensive collection of big band music. He gave recordings to his many friends for their enjoyment. He also was a master wood carver.

One of the highlights of his life was the Honor Flight to Washington, D.C., and visiting the World War II memorials. He was accompanied by Ken Aupperle of Morton.

His funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 28, 2014, at Bethel Lutheran Church in Morton, with Pastor Jeff Anderson officiating. Visitation will be at the church from 10 to 10:45 a.m., preceding the funeral. Military rites will be conducted at the church following the service. Burial will be at Roberts Cemetery in Morton.
