MORTON - Major Darst Jr., M.D., 90, of Shamong, N.J., formerly of Morton, died Monday, Oct. 8, 2012, at his home.

He was born July 14, 1922, in Eureka to Major Sr. and Ethel (Wilson) Darst. He married Laura Lee Detweiler on Dec. 24, 1944, in Peoria. She died in 1992. He later married Shirley Hawkins. She passed away in 2007.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Darlene Warne.

He is survived by his children, Cindy (Thomas) Eaton, Wendy (Bill) Hutchison, Lorie (Dave) Steeples, Major (Kalyane) Darst III, Nancy Hawkins, Carol (William) Powell, Julie (Dan) Wright, Jason Darst and Melanie (Joseph) Funk; 13 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one niece; one nephew; and one great-nephew.

Major graduated from Bradley University in Peoria and the University of Illinois School of Medicine in Chicago in the Navy V-12 program. He served as a medical doctor at the U.S. Naval Base in San Diego, Calif., for three years. After his service, he relocated to the East Coast, working as a physician (general surgeon) at Burlington County Hospital in Mount Holly, N.J. He had practices in Mount Holly and Lumberton, N.J. Later in his career, he specialized in reconstructive and cosmetic surgery.

Cremation was accorded by Mathis Funeral Home, 58 N. Main St., Medford, N.J. Services were held Monday, Oct. 15, at the funeral home. Interment will be held privately.
