PEORIA - Michael Donovan Dykstra, 74, of Peoria, Ill., and Naples, Fla., passed away peacefully on Friday, April 4, 2014, at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria, Ill., surrounded by family.
He was born in 1939 to Ralph and Mabel Dykstra in Peoria, Ill.
He was preceded in passing by his parents and sister, Doris.
He is survived by his wife, Nancee; sons, Paul (Erynn) and Scott; sister, Dottie (Don); grandchildren, Michael II and Reese; numerous nieces and nephews; and sister-in-law, Diane (Dan) Horan.
He graduated from Washington High School and the University of Illinois with a double engineering degree. He lettered at University of Illinois as chair of Intramural Association.
He was a member of Sigma Nu Fraternity, Society of Automotive Engineers, 32nd Degree Mason at Consistory Taylor Lodge 98 in Washington, Ill., Illinois Valley Yacht and Canoe Club and Westminster Presbyterian Church and was on the board of directors at the Institute of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.
Michael worked for IBM and then spent most of his career at Caterpillar, Inc., retiring in 2003.
His passion was for the University of Illinois, boating, football, basketball, the Chicago Bears, playing with his children and grandchildren and traveling.
A celebration of life will be held Thursday, April 10, 2014, from 2 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., with a prayer service at 4 p.m., at Illinois Valley Yacht and Canoe Club.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Peoria Regional Chapter of the Autism Society of America, 507 E. Armstrong Ave., Peoria, IL 61603, or donor's choice.
The Cremation Society of Mid-Illinois Co. Pekin/Peoria is assisting the family with arrangements.
