PETERSBURG - Nello Caldi, 96, of Bushnell, Fla., and formerly of East Point, Fla., and Petersburg, Ill., passed away on Friday, Nov. 2, 2012, at the Baldomero Lopez Memorial Veterans Nursing Home in Land O' Lakes, Fla.
He was born on Sept. 11, 1916, in Avon, Conn., the son of Julius and Sene (Schafer) Caldi. Nello married Mildred L. Gehring on Nov. 14, 1936.
He is survived by his son, Verlin (Irene) Caldi of Bushnell, Fla.; grandchildren, Ronald, Christianne, Leah and Julia; and great-grandchildren, Sabrina, John, Adam, Michael, Kyle, Hannah, Matthew, Clara, Mark and Gabriella.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; son, Donald Caldi in 1971; and two half brothers, John and George Zoril.
Before moving to Florida, Nello worked for many years at Ideal Industry and was later self-employed in carpentry and roofing.
He was a good man who enjoyed spending time with family and friends, going fishing, catching turtles and hunting.
Mr. Caldi served in the United States Army during World War II. He is the recipient of a Purple Heart, a Silver Star, Bronze Star and was a member of the VFW Post No. 6871 in Petersburg, Ill.
Funeral service will be Friday, Nov. 9, 2012, at 10 a.m. at St. Peter Catholic Church in Petersburg, with Father James Palakudy officiating. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday night at the funeral home. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, charitable donations may be made to the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
