PEORIA - Peggy Batchelder, age 95, formerly of Peoria, died on Saturday, March 29, 2014, at her residence in the Deerfield Retirement Community in Asheville, N.C.
Peggy was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Joseph H. Batchelder, Jr.
Born in Seattle, Wash., on Aug. 8, 1918, she was the daughter of the late Sabree Sumner Baker and Ernest W. Baker. She graduated from the University of Washington in Seattle and worked as a model for fashion and civic advertisements. In 1941, she married Joe and moved with him to Hawaii, where he was stationed on the USS Tennessee. Both Peggy and Joe survived the attack on Pearl Harbor, moved to New Orleans, La., and later Pensacola, Fla. After the war, Peggy moved to Joe's hometown, Peoria, Ill., where they raised their three children, BJ, Bo and Ann. In retirement, the couple established residencies in both Asheville and Lake Wales, Fla., where for 27 years, Peggy was an active artist and member of the Art League. After Joe's death, Peggy moved to Deerfield Retirement Community.
She is survived by her children, BJ Batchelder and Christa Paul, Bo and Judy Batchelder and Ann Batchelder and Henri Kieffer; seven grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
A private family memorial will be held in July to celebrate Peggy's life.
