LEWISTOWN - Richard W. "Rick" Velde, 72, of Lewistown passed away at 3:23 a.m. Friday, May 10, 2013, at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria
He was born April 15, 1941, in Peoria to Richard W. and Eleanor (Frisk) Velde. He married Jennie Weakly on Dec. 27, 1960, in New London, Mo.
Rick is survived by his wife, Jennie of Lewistown; two sons, Rick (Brenda) Velde of Mapleton and Brandon (Sandy) Velde of Peoria; one daughter, Shelly (Dan) Newton of Jacksonville; seven grandchildren, Ricky, Andy, Bethany, Mike, Matt, Nick and Noah; as well as one great-granddaughter, Sophie. Also surviving are three sisters, Ann (Bill) Baker of Oak Park, Ill., Patty Kamienski of Pinole, Calif., and Sue (Earl Brown) Velde of Crockett, Calif.; several nieces and nephews; and one beloved yellow lab, Jack.
After graduating from Havana High School, Mr. Velde attended Parsons College in Fairfield, Iowa, on a football scholarship. He then transferred to Knox College in Galesburg and played football there as well. He had owned and operated car washes in Pekin, Springfield and Peoria. For the past 35 years, he had farmed in Fulton County on his family farm. He was a longtime member of the BPO Elks Lodge 1271 in Pekin.
Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday, May 14, 2013, at Hurley Funeral Home in Havana, with visitation two hours prior to the services. Earl Brown will officiate.
Burial will follow the services at Laurel Hill Cemetery in Havana.
