PEORIA - Maurice F. "Sam" Ottenweller, 87, of Peoria passed away at 2:09 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 24, 2013, at Proctor Hospital.

Sam was born on Oct. 25, 1925, in Fort Wayne, Ind., to Edward and Edith Ottenweller. He married Harriette L. Brase on Sept. 3, 1949, in Fort Wayne, Ind. She survives.

He is also survived by his children, Bill (Judy) Ottenweller of San Carlos, Calif., Mary Anne (Wes) Carius of Geneseo, Ill., Kathy Wilkowski of Eugene, Ore., Tom Ottenweller of Madison, Wis., Christine (Pat) Munoz of Round Rock, Texas, and Theresa Maisel of Sarasota, Fla.; six grandchildren; one brother, Nelson (Jeanette) Ottenweller of Fort Wayne, Ind.; two sisters, Neva Nill of Fort Wayne, Ind., and Rita Mach of Minneapolis, Minn.; and a sister-in-law, Ruth Ottenweller of Lake Charles, La.

He was preceded in death by two sisters and one brother.

Sam was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, where he was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge, Bronze Star and Purple Heart. He later worked as a civil engineer for McDougal-Hartman Co. in Peoria, retiring as vice president.

He was loved by many for his kindness, gentle spirit, and his sense of humor. He was a great fan of Purdue sports. Sam's favorite times were spent at the lake with the family and grandkids.

Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Oct. 28, 2013, at St. Thomas Catholic Church. Monsignor William Watson will officiate. Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 27, 2013, at Wright & Salmon Mortuary, with a Scripture service at 2:30 p.m. An additional visitation will be 30 minutes prior to the Mass at the church. Burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery.
