Morton - Walter E. "Walt" Greenwalt, 71, of Morton died at 2:07 p.m. Tuesday, April 9, 2013, in the emergency room at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria.

He was born on May 29, 1941, in Peoria to Walter J. and Verneva (Halford) Greenwalt.

Surviving are his mother, Verneva Roberts of Vandalia, Ill.; his stepmother, Maria Greenwalt of Pharr, Texas; two sisters, Sue (George) Neal of Morton and Patricia (Danny) Abarr of Tucson, Ariz.; one half sister, Bertha (Sal) Cavazos of Baytown, Texas; one stepsister, Mary Sifuentes of Pharr, Texas; his brother-in-law, David Rivers of Tucson, Ariz.; six nephews, David and Daniel Rivers, Lowell and Luke Neal, Sean Abarr and Eddie Cavazos; four nieces, Lisa (Chris) de la Pena, Christina, Clarissa and Catherine Cavazos; and two great-nieces, Cayla and Brianna de la Pena.

He was preceded in death by his father; his stepfather, Carl Roberts; and one sister, Florence Rivers.

An Air Force veteran, he was an auto flight controls system specialist serving with the Strategic Air Command stationed in Thailand during the Vietnam War.

Walt earned a bachelor's degree in mathematics from Pan American University in Edinburg, Texas, in 1970 and completed studies in geophysics at Texas A&I University in 1972.

After teaching high school mathematics in Premont, Texas, for one year, he began his career in geophysics. He worked for Petty-Ray Geophysical, Cities Service Company, and Geoscan Inc., where he was Seismic Processing Manager. He last worked as a consultant.

Walt enjoyed gardening, raising flowers and was most proud of the tomatoes he grew.

Cremation will be accorded. Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. Sunday, April 14, 2013, at Knapp-Johnson Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Morton, followed by a memorial service at 2 p.m. with Pastor Jeff Anderson officiating. A graveside service with burial of the cremated remains will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, April 15, 2013, at Camp Butler National Cemetery in Springfield.
