William Armstrong Obituary

EAST PEORIA - William C. "Bill" Armstrong, 88, of Springfield, formerly of East Peoria and Morton, died Saturday, Nov. 16, 2013, at Banner Baywood Medical Center in Mesa, Ariz.

He was born March 19, 1925, in Atterberry, Ill., to Cyrus and Ruth (Bell) Armstrong. He married Norma Skinner on June 27, 1948, in Ashland, Ill. She preceded him in death on Oct. 10, 2006. He later married Barbara Tappendorf on May 9, 2009, in Fountain Hills, Ariz.

Surviving are his wife, Barbara, of Springfield and Mesa, Ariz.; one daughter, Sharon (Thom) Rothfolk of Mesa, Ariz.; three sons, Steve (Lou Ann) Armstrong of Metamora, Randall (Jennifer) Armstrong of Kickapoo and Roger Armstrong of Evergreen, Colo.; one stepson; five grandchildren, Michael LaReau of East Peoria, Ryan LaReau of Peoria, Nikki (Todd) Roepenack of Pekin, Sarah (Mike) Hibit of Kansas City, Kan., and Daniel Armstrong of Bellingham, Wash.; seven stepgrandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two sisters, Barbara (Bill) Sprick and Jean Williams, both of Peoria; one brother, Don Armstrong of Apple Valley, Calif.; his brothers-in-law, Art Linden of Peoria and Kenneth (Shirley) Skinner of the Springfield area; his sisters-in-law, Mary Lou Disco and Joanne Skinner, both of the Springfield area; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by four sisters and one brother.

He served with the United States Navy during World War II and the Korean War.

Bill founded and operated Armstrong Heating & Air Conditioning in East Peoria, retiring in 1987.

He was a 50-year member of First United Methodist Church in Peoria and was a member of Sheet Metal Workers International Local 1 out of Morton.

Bill enjoyed spending his winters in Arizona since 1987.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 22, 2013, at First United Methodist Church in Peoria, with the Rev. Adrian Garcia officiating. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Knapp-Johnson Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Morton, and from 10 to 10:45 a.m. Friday at the church. Burial will be at Hillcrest Memory Gardens in Morton, where full military rites will be conducted by Military Funeral Honors and Tazewell Military Rites Team.
