PEORIA - William Charles Smith, 82, of Peoria passed away at 6:10 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 10, 2013, at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center.
Born July 2, 1930, in Chicago, a son of William H. and Virginia Edwards Smith, William married Doris Mae Southey on May 17, 1952, in Kahoka, Mo. She died Dec. 13, 2011, in Peoria.
Also preceding him in death were three stepbrothers, Jonathan, Mackenzie and Kevin Smith.
Surviving are one daughter, Diane Lynn (Fred) West; one son, William H. Smith; four grandchildren, Natalie M. Fayal, Jacqueline S. (Troy) Fayal-Stenger of Peoria, Justin R. West of Tower Hill and Heather N. (John) Wright of American Canyon, Calif.; seven great-grandchildren, Alexys Stenger, Skylee Waldron, Mason, Haley and Bryce West and Juliet and Lucas Wright; and one sister, Peggy (Ronald) Heitzman of Geneseo.
William was in the Marine Corps from January 1948 to January 1952 and served in the Korean War. He served in the First Marine Division and was a recipient of the Purple Heart and Bronze Star.
William retired from Caterpillar Inc. in 1994.
Among his many interests, he especially enjoyed gardening with his beloved wife, working in his workshop and participating in Golden Gloves as a young man.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 14, 2013, at The Wilton Mortuary. Visitation will be one hour before services at the mortuary on Thursday. Burial will be in Springdale Cemetery.
