Zelvin Mitchell Obituary

PEORIA - Zelvin Mitchell Jr., 80, of Peoria passed away at 11 p.m. Thursday, March 27, 2014, at UnityPoint Health-Methodist in Peoria.

He was born July 16, 1933, in Peoria to Zelvin and Helen C. (Hyde) Mitchell. His parents preceded him in death.

He also was preceded in death by two brothers, Bob Mitchell and Bill Mitchell; and three half brothers, Chuck Harris, Jim Harris and Herb Harris.

Surviving are one sister, Sandra (Tom) Groff of Bartonville, and one brother, Leroy Johnson of Collierville, Tenn.

Mitch was a World War II veteran, having served in the United States Marine Corps.

Zelvin worked as a barber in the 1960s and later for Dental Arts Lab. He returned to the Midwest and eventually back to central Illinois, where he worked as an artist. His artwork is known in central Illinois and Branson, Mo. Pieces of his work have been sent to the Vatican in Rome and to John F. Kennedy at the White House, where it is thought to be displayed.

He enjoyed sculpting, painting and woodcarving.

He was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Peoria, where he had served as a Lector and a Eucharistic Minister. In 1982, he was professed into the Secular Franciscan Order.

His memorial Mass will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Peoria. Father Larry Zurich will officiate. Visitation will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday at Preston-Hanley Funeral Homes & Crematory in Pekin. Private burial will be in Camp Butler National Cemetery in Springfield.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 504 Fulton St., Peoria, IL 61602.
