FERRIN, Allan Wheeler

Allan Wheeler Ferrin, age 92, passed away May 19, 2014, nearly four years to the day after the death of his beloved wife Barbara Hogate Ferrin. He was born on August 10, 1921, in Mt. Vernon, NY, and grew up in Scarsdale, NY, where he resided most of his life until moving permanently to Palm Beach, FL, in 1998. He graduated from Princeton University with honors in 1943 and immediately joined the Army where he served through 1946. While on leave in September, 1943, he married his fiancee Barbara Hogate. After his military service, he followed in the tradition of his father and entered the publishing business. He progressed through various marketing, editorial and management positions to the presidency of the text book publisher Appleton Century Crofts. When that firm was acquired by the Meredith Corporation, he joined the board of that company and served as Vice President and General Manager of the Meredith Educational Division. In 1973, he left Meredith to become President of AMACOM, the publishing unit of the American Management Association (AMA). Subsequently he served as Senior Vice President, Chief Financial Officer, President of AMA/International and, finally, as Executive Vice President. He retired from AMA in 1987. He served as Vice President of Phi Beta Kappa Associates; Chairman of the Holiday Hills YMCA in Pawling, NY; a Director of the YMCA of New York; and a brief stint as a volunteer fireman in Scarsdale, NY. In each community in which he resided he joined and helped in the governance of his church. He is survived by his daughter, Bonnie Ferrin; his son, Allan H. Ferrin and his wife Barbara L. Ferrin; his grandchildren, Christopher M. Lane and his wife Jackie, Leigh E. Ferrin and her husband Carmen Wallace, and Ellen L. Ferrin; two great-grandchildren; and many wonderful, dear friends. He liked to say that at age 92-1/2, he had had a good wife, good children and a good life. A service in his honor will be held at 11:00AM am, Monday, June 9th at the Royal Poinciana Chapel, 60 Cocoanut Row, Palm Beach, FL 33480. Memorials may be sent to benefit the Chapel or the .
