Augusto "Chav" Chavez, 95 years old, of West Palm Beach, passed away on Tuesday, April 9th, 2013. He was born May 7th, 1917 and was raised in Tabor, Cuba. He was 1 of 13 children born to Julian and Maria Ayala Chavez and was the last survivor of the Chavez children. While residing in Cuba, he met and married the true love of his life, Inez Urtiaga Chavez. Augusto was a business owner in Tabor, Cuba. Before entering this country for freedom, he was taken from his family for 4 years and was kept in a work camp where men were stripped of their families and homes and they were only able to see their families twice a month. Finally, in January of 1971, Augusto brought his wife, Inez and his two children, Alicia and Augusto "Gus" to the land of Freedom, USA. They landed in Miami with the clothes on their backs and $80.00 given to him by the US Government. At the age of 53, when most men are thinking of retiring, he had to start all over. In his heart he knew he just provided the greatest gift that any father could give his children, a future with freedom and opportunities. He worked at Richs Ice Cream with his wife for a short time, worked at Atlantic Sugar Mill and finished out his years at Jerry's Catering at the airport. He raised his children to be hard workers, with his daughter, Alicia, becoming an insurance agent and his son, Gus, becoming a police officer with West Palm Beach for the last 26 years. In the midst of all that, he became a citizen of The United States and owned his own home. Augusto was a man who came from Cuba with a 6-grade education, who fought for freedom, who believed in hard work and loved his family. His life truly was the American dream. Augusto is survived by his companion in life and wife of 68 years, Inez. His greatest joys were his children, Alicia Summers, and Augusto "Gus" (wife, Lisa) until the loves of his life were born: his two grandchildren, Brittany, a nurse and AJ now in college, to follow in his father's footsteps as a policeman. His two grandchildren will miss him more than words can ever express. No words can describe the love and pride his grandchildren gave him. "Te Quire mucho Elle". All the sacrifices you have made for us will never be forgotten, will always be appreciated and could never be repaid in ten lifetimes. We are honored to say, "We are your children. We love you Papi". He is also survived by his brother-in-law Fidel Urtiaga, nephews, Neno Chavez and Renaldo Ramirez, and former daughter-in-law Stephanie Chavez. Friends may visit with the family between the hours of 6:00 to 9:00 PM on Monday, April 22, 2013, at QUATTLEBAUM FUNERAL HOME, 1201 South Olive Avenue, West Palm Beach, with a Wake Service to be held at 7:00 PM. The Mass of the Resurrection will be held at 10:00 AM on Tuesday, April 23, 2013 at St. Juliana Catholic Church, West Palm Beach, with interment to follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park, West Palm Beach.
