GIBSON, Betty Jackson

Passed away on Sunday, November 25 in Forest City, NC with her son, Howard, at her side. Betty was born March 28, 1931 in Petrey, AL to Sid and Myra Jackson. After starting her family Betty earned degrees in education from Troy University and the University of Florida. She taught English and Spanish to high school students in Ft. Deposit, AL, Jupiter High in Jupiter, FL, and from 1969 through 1987 at West High in Torrance, CA, where she received Teacher of the Year honors. Her career culminated in assignments as Vice Principal, Principal, and Curriculum Coordinator in the Torrance Unified School District. She retired in 1995. Betty embraced Los Angeles as her home and enjoyed sharing her Southern heritage with friends and colleagues there. She had a passion for Spanish and Latin American art, music and culture, studying in both Spain and Mexico. She was a member and supporter of the LA Philharmonic and shared this joy with family and friends. Her passion for artful living and her dedication to education left a lasting mark on all her knew her. Betty is survived by four sons, Howard (Amy) Rutherfordton, NC, Albert (Ruth) Placitas, NM, Bob, Stuart, FL, and Walter (Penny), Old Fort, NC, nine grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. She is also survived by brothers, Jack (Bobbie) Jackson, and Jim (Lucy) Jackson, both of Luverne, AL, numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Betty is preceded by her husband, William H. Gibson, and her parents. A celebration of Betty?s life will be held for family in Petrey, AL. Condolences may be sent c/o Albert Gibson, 13 Camino Conejo Azul, Placitas, NM 87043.
