Florence Wacks passed away Tuesday, March 25, 2014, shortly after her 100th birthday. Born in Brooklyn, New York, Florence was a long time resident of Trenton, New Jersey and Yardley, Pennsylvania. She was a graduate of New York University, earning her bachelor's and master's degrees. During her college years she worked at summer camps as the waterfront director, was an accomplished field hockey player, and was among the first women to serve as a beachfront lifeguard at Jones Beach. Florence was a beloved physical education and health teacher with the Trenton Board of Education for more than 20 years. The former president of both the Trenton and Palm Beach sections of the National Council of Jewish Women, she was honored with the Hannah G. Solomon award in 1986. Florence is listed in Who's Who of American Women and was active in the women's rights movement. Wife of the late Dr. Benjamin Wacks, she is survived by her son, Dr. Robert Wacks and daughter-in-law Ellen Wacks; daughter Alice Welt and son-in-law Dr. Howard Welt; six grandchildren, Rachel and Daniel Wacks, Jessica Gerson, Laura Lavell, Karen Welt Steeves, and Susan Welt; and four great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held in Trenton, New Jersey on Friday, March 28, 2014.
