Margaret E. (Burke) BURKLUND

Obituary Condolences

BURKLUND, Margaret E. (Burke)

Loving wife and mother, thankful friend Margaret Burklund, age 94, of North Palm Beach, FL, passed away on 6 July 2013. Margaret was born 3 January 1919 in Boston, MA daughter of John Bayley Burke and Margaret Hogan Burke. She was a joyous surprise to her family as her father was 52, her mother 47 and siblings in their 20's. She grew up surrounded by love. A love she returned her entire life. Margaret had a bubbling personality; warm people skills and a strength and determination that belied her "5' tall with 3" heels" height. She was president of her junior and senior class at Jeremiah E. Burke High School, Boston, MA and graduated in 1937. She worked as a secretary in Boston until she met the love of her life, Bernard B. Burklund at a USO dance. World War II delayed their marriage plans as Bernard was a CPO in the US Navy. Following the war they married on 9 June 1946, and began a life together that lasted 60 years. As a Navy wife, Margaret traveled the world in support of her husband, raised her two sons and took care of the "home front" wherever it happened to be including two assignments to the Panama Canal Zone. In 1958 when her husband retired from the Navy and decided to go back to school, Margaret was selected for a job she loved as the Administrative Assistant to the Director of Nursing, University of Florida, College of Nursing. Margaret served in this position until Bernard graduated and she got her PHT degree from University of Florida. The family moved to North Palm Beach in 1963, where she worked as a secretary at RCA, Control Data Corp and St. Marks Episcopal Church. Margaret retired but went on to find the vocation of her life: Instructor for North Palm Beach's Fitness Over Fifty exercise class. She found her niche as she led "her girls" every Monday, Wednesday and Friday for the next 20 years. Margaret loved to dance, listen to music, walk the beach and people watch. In her final days, Margaret met each day with an abiding faith, love and a strength that encouraged us all. Margaret will be missed by many but especially by her children, Col Bernard B. Burklund, Jr., USAF Ret and wife Kay of Oviedo, FL and John Bayley Burklund of Lake Park, FL. A memorial mass will be celebrated at 11:00 AM, 8 August 2013, at St. Clare Church, 821 Prosperity Farms Rd, North Palm Beach, FL, where she was a member for over 50 years. Interment will take place at Sutherland Riverview Cemetery, Sutherland, NE, at a future date. In lieu of flowers please consider donations to St. Clare Catholic Church or Hospice of Palm Beach County. Arrangements by Howard-Price Funeral Home. Margaret and her family thank the exceptional caregivers at The Gardens Court, Palm Beach Gardens, FL and Hospice of Palm Beach County, FL.
