Phillip W. Tefft, 96, of Upper Arlington, OH, died peacefully Monday, May 6, 2013. Phillip was born in Darlington, PA April 24, 1917 to the late Charles Forrest and Melissa Grace Tefft, and at 8 years of age moved to Upper Arlington. He graduated in 1935 from Upper Arlington High School as a letterman in football, basketball, and track. He attended Alfred University, and graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Ceramic Engineering from The Ohio State University. In 1973 he was presented the Distinguished Alumnus Award by both The Ohio State University and Upper Arlington High School. Phillip had the great fortune to be married for sixty years to his high school sweet heart, Kathleen Franks with whom he reared four children. In 2001, shortly after Kathleen's death, he had the additional joy of meeting and marrying Jean Dye Trabue, Tippy. As a very young man, Phil began working with the Claycraft Company, joining his father and brother in the family business. Upon completing his studies, he assumed managerial responsibility, eventually becoming President and Chairman of the Board upon the passing of his father the early 1950's. In recognition of his many contributions, he was elevated to the position of a Fellow of the American Ceramic Society in 1956. He received his honorary Doctorate from Alfred University in 1975. His deep commitment to the greater community of Columbus led him to become a member and chairman of many civic organizations and committees dedicated to providing financial and economic benefits for those in need. Phillip was an engaging man with great curiosity. He especially loved being with family and friends and he had a zest for life which included his love of fine woodworking, flying, sailing, tennis, and barbecuing. He was a legend of longevity on the golf course playing a round of 18 in his final days. Phil was a very active 50 year member of Scioto Country Club and a member of Tequesta Country Club in Florida. In addition to his parents, Phillip was preceded in death by his first wife, Kathleen (Franks) Tefft and siblings, Charles Brandt, John Carvel, Helene Marcelle, and Joyce Elaine. Phillip will be missed by his wife, Jean,Tippy, (Trabue) Tefft; daughters, Diane Tefft Young, of Upper Arlington, Susan Kathleen Tefft, of East Hampton, MA, Pamela Melissa Tefft (Thomas E. Matuszko) of Hadley, MA; son, Phillip (Victoria) Ward-Tefft, of London, England; grandchildren: Andrew Tefft (Stephanie) Young and Tegan Grace Ward-Tefft; and great-grandchildren, Alexander Tefft Young and Katherine Elaine Young. He is also survived by Jean's children and grandchildren, Nancy O'Donnell, Jack Trabue, Dr. Jeff Trabue, Jim Trabue, Patricia Trabue, grandchildren, Heath, Hugh, Halle, Katie, Kelly, Bonnie, Sean, Molly. Family will receive friends Friday, May 10, 2013 from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at SCHOEDINGER NORTHWEST CHAPEL, 1740 Zollinger Rd., Columbus, OH.
