Robert Lester HATTON Obituary
HATTON, Robert Lester

Robert Lester Hatton, Glades Pioneer Physician, dies at 86. Robert Lester Hatton, a well-known Palm Beach County obstetrician and gynecologist, died at Good Samaritan Hospital on Sunday, November 17, 2013. Born on August 9, 1927, in Brutus, KY, Robert moved with his Family to, Pahokee in 1935. He was the second of nine children born to "Mama Lois" and "Papa Joe" Hatton, one of the Founding Farm Families of the Glades. After serving in the Merchant Marines and the Army's Tenth Mountain Division as a ski trooper and trumpeter Robert went to Louisiana State University to pursue a degree in music. While at LSU, he met and married his wife Marian. Upon his graduation, he decided to become a physician and enrolled in Tulane Medical School in New Orleans. Upon graduation Robert and Marian moved to Miami, FL, where he did his internship and residency in OB/GYN at Jackson Memorial Hospital. Robert initially planned to build a practice in Miami, however, after much soul searching, and the realization the there was no OB/GYN in the entire area around Lake Okeechobee, he and Marian left Miami and came to Pahokee to serve the needs of the surrounding Glades area. Dr. Hatton viewed his practice of medicine as his primary purpose and ministry to the community. In his 41 years as on OB/GYN he delivered approximately 20,000 babies. His love and his passion for his work were demonstrated by the compassion and care he provided to his patients. Upon his retirement, Dr. Hatton and his wife, Marian, moved to Jupiter, FL and became involved in various medical groups and church activities. Robert is survived by Marian, his wife of 63 years, three children, Lori Abner (Teddy), Lisa Anderson (Russell), and Byron Hatton (Becky), his sister Dorothy Buckner (Louis), sisters-in-law Nina Hatton and Buttons Hatton, five grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday, November 23, 2013, at 10:00 AM at the Good Shepherd Church of God, 1800 Bacom Point Road in Pahokee, FL.
